What is Chiropractic?

A chiropractor is a health care professional who specialises in the health and function of the spine and the nervous system.

Chiropractic treatment involves thorough assessment and management of the neuromusculoskeletal system. We use specific and considered techniques to adjust the spine and alter dysfunctional muscle patterns.

Our main goals are to reduce pain, improve mobility, optimise strength and preserve your spinal health.

Treatment techniques include manual and low force adjustments, soft tissue release, exercise prescription and homecare advice. Treatment is ALWAYS customised to the patient, taking into account their past experience with chiropractic care and any techniques preferences (eg. Only low force/gentle adjustments).

Chiropractic & Kids

Chiropractic and kids

In Australia, chiropractors provide care to more than 30,000 paediatric patients (0-18 years old) every week.

Chiropractors are taught a range of techniques to care for patients and modify all care to suit the age, presentation and development of the patient.

All Australian chiropractors abide by a national Code of Conduct to ensure best practice and maintain the highest level of professional competence and ethics, including:

  • Ensuring the needs of the patient are at the forefront of all care;

  • Ensuring there is informed consent from the paediatric patient’s parent or guardian;

  • Carefully explaining the risks of care and alternatives to care to the parent or guardian; and

  • Identifying any ‘red flags’ to the paediatric patient and investigating, managing, co-managing or referring to an appropriate health practitioner.

Manual Therapies are valued by parents and form part of a comprehensive approach to paediatric care.

Chiropractors can play an active role in monitoring development, motor skills, and wellbeing through assessments.

How do adjustments of the spine improve nervous system function?

The central nervous system is one big information highway; it carries vital messages to and from every part of your body. Every function from movement, digestion, breathing, organ function, healing, quality of sleep, your immune system and how your body responds to stress (just to name a few..) is controlled and coordinated by your nervous system.

Sometimes the wear and tear of everyday life can impact the spine, and cause spinal segments to move in a way that is different to normal, in a dysfunctional way. That wear and tear can happen gradually, such as from bad posture, or it can happen suddenly, which is common with sports injuries. Stressors may include:

- Physical Stress (eg. posture, injuries),

- Mental/Emotional Stress (eg. Work or family stress) and/or

- Chemical Stress (eg. Medications, diet, water intake)

Because of the close relationship between the spine and the nervous system, everyday strains can actually impact the flow of information and communication between the brain and the body. Messages may not be delivered to the brain, or they may be inaccurate. Dysfunctional spinal movement may impact your mobility and may also involve trigger inflammation, resulting in pain.

By making fast, gentle adjustments to the spine, chiropractors aim to restore its natural movement and help your body and nervous system to function at its optimum potential.
